Welcome Necla Kayaalp
Necla was born in Izmir in 1987. She graduated from the Department of Mathematics, Izmir University of Economics in 2010.
Then she started to do a master in Applied Statistics at the same university. After graduating from the master program, she did a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
She worked at Izmir University of Economics as a research assistant for seven years during my graduate studies. Her Ph.D. thesis “A new RNA-Seq data classifier based on
quantile transformation” was supervised by Prof. Dr. G.Y. Tütüncü. She gained extensive knowledge in the field of genomic research and familiarised with RNA-Seq technology
in the very beginning of my dissertation. In 2018, Prof. Dr. Gordon K Smyth, co-division head of Bioinformatics division at WEHI, invited her to visit his lab in Australia.
With the scholarship she got from “The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey”, she joined Smyth lab for 8 months as a visiting scientist. During her visit at
Smyth lab, she focused on the RNA-Seq data analysis and developed a novel classification method for RNA-Seq samples, which was published in PeerJ, Bioinformatics and
Genomics section. Additionally, she assisted trainees in R workshops held at WEHI at that time. They finally focused on dependency between genes locally and proposed a new
local covariance matrix estimation technique for high throughput genomic data where dependence relation has a major role in the analysis. This study was published in
Expert Systems with Applications in 2020. After getting graduated from Ph.D., she worked in a COVID19 project as a postdoctoral researcher for 8 months. They focused on the
mutational dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in the UK and US populations and the results are published in Infection, Genetics and Evolution.
Her research interests are computational biology, statistical data analysis, fuzzy theory, classification and biostatistics.
Welcome Selim Yürekli
Selim is continuing his undergraduate degree in computer engineering at Istanbul Technical University as a 3rd year student. He works on algorithm design and analysis in autonomous vehicles, computer vision, machine learning and deep learning. In PMAA group, he is currently working on 'Deep learning Based Data Classification for Drug Discovery'.
